The UCI Road World Championships, with cyclists taking part in a series of 13 events across the Greater Montreal area, are set to cause major traffic disruptions in Montreal from Sept. 20 to 27. In Montreal, seven boroughs are expected to be affected, including Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Outremont, Plateau-Mont-Royal, Sud-Ouest, Verdun, Ville-Marie, as well as the City of Westmount. Here is all the information you need to know when it comes to getting around the Greater Montreal area during the event: The races The main venue for the event will be located at the foot of Mont Royal, on Parc Avenue between des Pins and Mont-Royal avenues. “This strategic location will host the majority of the race starts and all the finishes, as well as the Fan Village,” the city explains. Additionally, the starting point for the two major races is set to be in the Montérégie region, crossing the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge and heading to the Mont-Royal circuit. Officials state that the installation of barriers along the daily routes is expected to begin each morning at 7 a.m., with streets reopening at the end of each competition day. Montreal road closures The competition is set to take place on streets across several areas of Greater Montreal. “Routes will vary each day depending on the events, meaning that road closures and restriction times will differ from one day to another,” said city officials. Montérégie road closures To facilitate travel during competition days, free parking is set to be available at the Chevrier parking lot in Brossard on Monday, Sept. 21 and Tuesday, Sept. 22. Free shuttles are expected to be on site to connect to the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) Du Quartier station between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. “This measure aims to encourage the use of public transit and reduce the impact of road closures on travel,” officials note. On Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27, parking at the Chevrier terminal is slated to be available, with free on-site shuttles to the elite race start areas and fan zones. Check out the interactive map to see the areas affected. Parking No parking is permitted along the race routes throughout the event, the City of Montreal emphasizes. Public transit The site is accessible by bus, though due to numerous road closures, traffic is expected to be significantly impacted. “Several bus routes will be detoured or suspended near the race courses,” the City of Montreal said. “We strongly recommend using the Metro to get around.” Users are also encouraged to use the REM.
