Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Calgary area: ECCC

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the Calgary area Sunday morning.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) posted the watch at 10:39 a.m., warning that “conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain this afternoon and evening.”

Sunday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and rain, with light showers falling at 1:15 p.m. and a chance for a severe thunderstorm along with winds gusting to 40 km/h.

Street flooding

As rain fell Sunday afternoon, it caused problems at one southeast Calgary intersection.

At one point, the rain fell so hard and so fast that the intersection at 58 Avenue and 5 Street S.E. that it flooded.

One vehicle got caught in the deluge and firefighters carried those stuck inside the vehicle to safety.

That particular intersection was closed until water levels receded.
