North Bay drug overdose surge prompts public alert

North Bay police warn of a 'significant' surge in suspected overdoses, citing early evidence of a contaminated illicit drug supply.

The North Bay Police Service issued a public safety alert Friday, urging community members, service providers and family members to share the following messaging and check on people who may be at risk.

The service said it is reporting “a significant increase” in suspected overdoses, though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.

“While the exact cause has not yet been confirmed, this increase represents a serious concern about potentially toxic substances in the unregulated drug supply,” said police in a news release.

Signs and emergency response

Police are asking residents to recognize the signs of an overdose or drug poisoning, which may include:

• Slow, irregular, or no breathing,
• blue or gray lips and fingernails,
• unresponsiveness,
• choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds,
• cold or clammy skin,
• pinpoint pupils and
• seizures or severe confusion.

Anyone who suspects an overdose is urged to call 911 immediately, stay with the person until help arrives, and administer naloxone, if available.

“In Ontario, the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides some legal protection for those seeking emergency help during an overdose,” said police.

Harm-reduction measures

To reduce the risk of harm, police are advising people who use drugs to take precautions. They recommend:

• Not using alone.
• Carrying naloxone and ensuring you know how to use it.
• Starting with a small test dose.
• Knowing your condition and tolerance.
• Calling 911 immediately in an emergency.

Naloxone kits are available free of charge at many local pharmacies and through community health services.
