Persistent melting expected this week with daytime highs as warm as 14 C by Saturday

Beautiful few days of weather in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

This week will be the literal polar opposite to the end of last week.

Persistent snowfall and unusually cold temperatures impacted most of Alberta from Thursday to Saturday, however a building ridge of high pressure has started to edge into southern Alberta and is already changing that weather story.

Sunday’s unofficial high in Calgary was 9 C, a temperature that will be repeated on Monday and Tuesday.

The overnight lows for most of this week will sit above the seasonal average of -10 C, especially heading into next weekend.

Early Monday, some freezing fog was reported at the Calgary International Airport and visibility was compromised in some communities as well as north of Calgary along the QEII.

Once the sun introduces more heat post-sunrise that fog will mix out.

With above seasonal daytime highs and lows below freezing there will be rapid melting during the day and water pooling in locations where the ground is still frozen.

This will elevate the risk of slips and falls, especially early in the day where that pooled water freezes overnight.

These temperatures swings and associated freeze-thaw cycles could amplify stress to infrastructure this week.
