Melting to resume Thursday and peak on Saturday with a high of 14 C

More sunshine and wind in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Fog developed in Calgary early Wednesday and remained in place well into the afternoon as a layer of cold air sat trapped against the surface.

Those conditions inhibited warming, leaving Wednesday’s daytime high in Calgary, six degrees below the forecast high of 0 C.

Pockets of fog were also present around central and southern Alberta early Thursday. As of 7 a.m., some low-lying fog was visible in Calgary.

That fog will mix out during the morning, and a gradual warmup will begin by the afternoon.

Light and scattered precipitation fell early Thursday and there is a chance of more scattered precipitation later in the day. If this does occur around Calgary, the accumulations will be minimal.

Daytime highs around southern Alberta are expected to sit in the mid-single-digits Thursday and reach double-digits by Saturday.

Another freeze-thaw cycle will set up over the next couple of days as snow melts during the day and water pools before it freezes again in the overnight period.

Icy patches will form in areas like parking lots, sidewalks, back alley’s, side streets, intersections, bridge decks, on and off-ramps, as well as locations at the base of slopes or hills where water can pool during the day.

The next significant chance of precipitation for the Calgary area comes on Sunday when a frontal system moves in and initiates another pattern change. Snowfall totals of five to seven centimetres are expected around Calgary with snow tapering off on Monday.

A large polar air mass will park over most of northern Canada starting Sunday and zonal flow will set up along the southern borders with creating persistent cooler temperatures..

The daytime highs in Calgary are expected to range from -3 C to 3 C from Monday until Saturday.
