Cold warnings issued across the west as wind chill values sit around -40

Well below seasonal temperatures in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A large polar air mass remains parked over Western Canada creating dangerously cold wind chill values.

Yellow-level cold warnings were issued for a good portion of central and northern Alberta with Environment and Climate Change Canada explaining, “Wind chills of minus 40 are occurring this morning and will return again tonight for many regions in Alberta. Wind chills will moderate Friday afternoon for much of the province.”

Southern Alberta is also navigating unusually cold temperatures.

As of 5 a.m. Thursday the wind chill value in Calgary was -34.

This pattern will ease slightly as the weekend begins, and daytime highs in Calgary will improve to -8 C on Friday compared to -16 C on Thursday.

The normal high this time of year is 0 C.

The next chance of snow in Calgary come on Sunday with a 30 per cent chance of light and scattered flurries.

Daytime highs will moderate at the start of next week and reach 3 C by Wednesday.
