A large fire that broke out at a southeast Calgary landfill has been extinguished through a continuous effort by city firefighters, officials say. Late Monday night, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) said the blaze at the Ecco Recycling site was brought under control. The scene has now been released back to the site operators for monitoring. CFD said communities in the area should be safe now that the fire is out. “The smoke from the site has been reduced significantly and there is no longer a plume drifting into adjacent communities,” officials said in a news release. “The cooperation of citizens has been pivotal during this operation and conditions should return to normal.” At 6 p.m. on Sept. 6, a fire broke out in a pile of scrap at the recycler located between Barlow Trail and 24 Street S.E. Officials do not know how the blaze started, but the company’s president said it was located in a pile of scrap in a northeast section of the property “where there has been no activity for several months.” In April 2022, a similar fire at Ecco also caused issues for nearby residents, while another broke out in 2019.
