Calgary has poor visibility due to fog; freezing rain possible later in the day

Dense fog settled over central and southern Alberta early Wednesday.

With temperatures around -10 C and very little wind, those fog patches spread and eventually yellow-level fog advisories were issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

By 7 a.m., visibility was limited to less than one kilometre around Calgary.

In their advisory, ECCC explained “near zero visibility in fog [h]as developed in many areas. The fog will dissipate this morning. Travel will likely be hazardous in some locations. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic.”

As of 8:15 a.m., dense fog was also present on 511 Alberta cameras in all directions outside of Calgary.

Snow and mixed precipitation were falling in the B.C. interior early Wednesday, and that system will cross over the Rockies during the day.

There is a chance of freezing rain late Wednesday and early Thursday along Highway 3 in southern Alberta.

If the worst-case scenario occurs, thick layers of ice could accrue on some surfaces, including roadways.

In Calgary, that fog will start to mix out later in the day, but traction will likely be impacted where there had been melting and freezing overnight.

Melting will stall on Wednesday as daytime highs peak around the freezing mark, but rapid melting will resume on Thursday.

By Friday, temperatures in southern Alberta will reach the double digits with overnight lows more than 10 degrees warmer than the average of -10 C.

Another quick change is expected early next week.

Monday’s daytime high in Calgary will be 12-degrees colder than Sunday’s high, with those cooler temps expected to last for most of next week.
