Calgarian Sonny Meredith representing Canada at 2026 World Boxing Futures Cup in Thailand

Three boxers from Alberta will represent Canada at the World Boxing Futures Cup. One of those boxers heading to Thailand is 17-year-old Sonny Meredith.

Sonny Meredith started boxing when he was six years old.

His dad was a boxer, and all of his siblings followed in the man’s footsteps.

Meredith says climbing into the ring was a way of life for the family.

“My older brother and sister were doing it – and seeing them do it from a young age, I wanted to do it.”

Doesn’t know what he’d do without boxing

Meredith says he loves everything about the sport and is in his ‘happy place’ when he’s boxing and training.

“When I’m not in [the ring], I’m not happy. When I’m in there, I’m as happy as can be.”

“Every time I train, I feel great. Everything about it; the running, hitting the bag and sparring. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

On his way to Thailand

Meredith is making a name for himself in the sport.

He is one of three Albertans chosen by Boxing Canada to represent the National team in Bangkok, Thailand, at the 2026 World Boxing Futures Cup from March 8 to 15.

Meredith says he’s thrilled.

“I’ve always known my skillset and now I get to show people. Everybody gets to watch me, so I’m very excited,” he said.

“I’ve proved to myself and to everybody there’s a reason why I’m here, and a reason why I’ve been doing this for so long. I believe I’m one of the best and I’m here to prove it.”

Meredith boxes out of the Calgary Boxing Club in Inglewood.

Jessica Sparrow, the head boxing coach at the club, says she thinks Meredith will perform well in Thailand.

“It’s so exciting this qualifier that he’s going to,” she said. “It’s a qualifier for the youth Olympics, and I think now especially with the Olympics on TV, it’s just so exciting.”

“We expect great things for him there.”

Family is proud

Meredith trained with his older sister Ella and his younger sister Izzy on Monday.

Ella says the whole family is proud of Meredith.

“If anyone deserves it, it’s him,” she said. “I see him work day in and day out, harder than anyone.”

“He’s worked his whole life towards this, so everyone in the family is overwhelmed with pride.”
