Alberta minister plans to meet grocery store owners about rising price of food

The province is planning to meet with grocery store owners to address rising food prices.

On her Saturday radio show, Your Province, Your Premier, Danielle Smith said Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally is planning to meet with grocery store owners “owners to find out the kind of things that we can do to try to address the issue of food prices.”

Smith said there were three things impacting the cost of living in Alberta: volatile global fuel prices stemming from the war in the Middle East, high utility rates and the cost of groceries.

“The other thing I think people feel is when they go to the grocery store, and they’re at the meat counter, and they’re buying ham, and buying chicken, and buying eggs and the milk, and they’re saying, why are things more expensive than I remember?” Smith said.

“So we’re going to talk to the grocery store owners and say, ‘What can we do for those crucial staples to try to bring the cost of some of the staples down?’”

Nally’s office sent CTV News the following statement.

“Our government is meeting with Canada’s largest grocers to address food affordability.

“While many of the pressures on food prices are national and global, we’re focused on what we can change locally to increase competition and help lower prices for Albertans.

“Keeping costs down for Albertans is a top priority, and I’m moving quickly to deliver a clear path forward that does exactly that.”
