People living in a remote First Nation off the coast of Tofino are without running water after a pipe burst over the weekend.
The deputy chief councillor of Ahousaht First Nation said the pipe burst early Friday, shutting down the area water system.
Crews located the leak and began repairing it at low tide Sunday night.
In the meantime, affected residents are able to fill up containers with water at the community’s pump house.
Bottled water and five-gallon jugs have also been donated by neighbouring municipalities like Tofino, Ucluelet and Port Alberni.
The lack of water made a fire that broke out at a home on the island community Saturday especially challenging for crews.
A fire truck filled with water was used to douse the flames until crews were told to stand down.
People were then refilling pails with water to try to snuff out the flames.
The home was eventually destroyed. Officials say it was unoccupied at the time.
