Wrong-way driver in downtown Barrie facing impaired charges

A 27-year-old Barrie woman is facing impaired driving charges after police say they spotted her going the wrong way down a one-way street over the weekend.

On Saturday, officers were on patrol downtown when they observed the vehicle driving southbound on Clapperton Street, a one-way road designated for northbound traffic.

Police say they pulled over the driver and immediately noticed the smell of alcohol. They also observed several opened and unopened cans within the driver’s reach.

Officers administered a roadside breath test, which registered a fail, leading to the her arrest.

The woman was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters for further testing and was subsequently charged with impaired operation, operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams and failing to comply with a probation order.

Police say her driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
