Video shows person walking on Kempenfelt Bay ice

Video supplied by a viewer shows a person walking on possibly thinning ice in the middle of Kempenfelt Bay.

A person was seen walking in the middle of Kempenfelt Bay on possibly thinning ice Sunday evening.

Video supplied by a viewer shows the person appearing to be several hundred yards away from the shores of Barrie’s General John Hayter Southshore Community Centre. A firefighter is also seen observing the situation.

CTV News reached out to Barrie Fire about the incident. Rachel Chinchilla, the city’s assistant deputy chief, says their drone was deployed over the ice. She confirmed that the person was not in distress and they did not want assistance.

“No ice is safe ice at this time of year with this type of weather,” said Chinchilla.

She says crews are ready to respond for an ice rescue if there is someone in distress on ice.
