Traffic stop turns into multiple weapon and drug charges for driver and passenger

A driver and passenger are facing a handful of weapon and related charges after getting pulled over in Oro-Medonte early Saturday morning.

According to Orillia OPP, an officer was patrolling Highway 11 northbound near Line 10 at around 1:40 a.m. when they stopped a vehicle that had its rear lights turned off.

As they searched the vehicle, police say the officers found cannabis, and eventually a loaded firearm.

“A loaded firearm, 13 rounds of ammunition, a knife, and several pill capsules of suspected dilaudid were located and seized by police,” confirmed an Orillia OPP media officer in a news release.

The 28-year-old occupant from Oro-Medonte was charged with the following offences:

• Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition (four counts)
• Carrying a firearm in a careless manner
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
• Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammo
• Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
• Possession of a Schedule I Substance (Opioid)

They were held pending a Saturday bail hearing.

The 26-year-old occupant from London was charged with the following offences:

• Novice driver - blood alcohol concentration above zero
• Driving without a proper rear light
• Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor
• Having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available
• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
• Occupant of a Motor Vehicle knowing there was Firearm
• Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited or restricted weapon (two counts)

They were released from custody and scheduled for a future court date.
