The residents have spoken and Canadian Press are projecting Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario elect Susan Lahey will represent York-Simcoe at Queens Park after a by-election in the region on September 3. According to Elections Ontario, Lahey collected 49 per cent of the vote. Voter turnout for this riding was just above 20 per cent The riding remains with Doug Ford’s caucus which has been a Progressive Conservative stronghold since its inception in 2007. Former MPP Caroline Mulroney held that seat since 2018 before stepping down in June. In her time with the Ford government she served as Minister of Francophone Affairs, Minister of Transportation, Attorney General of Ontario and President of the Treasury Board Mulroney is the daughter of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney The riding covers Bradford West Gwillimbury, East Gwillimbury and Georgina. It also covers the northern part of Municipality of King and the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. Based on census data, there are about 125,000 people in the riding. Lahey goes to Queen’s Park with municipal government experience, serving as a member of East Gwillimbury City Council for the last three-years.
