One dead in Dwight house fire, another hospitalized

One person died and another was hospitalized Tuesday night after a house fire in Dwight.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Spring Lake Road in the Township of Lake of Bays just before 8 p.m.

Roughly 20 firefighters from Lake of Bays Fire Rescue stations in Hillside and Port Cunnington arrived to find the residence filled with thick black smoke.

Crews say they carried out a rapid assessment and ventilated the home while working to track down any remaining hot spots.

Fire officials report one person was found dead inside the home while another was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

The Office of the Fire Marshal remains on scene Wednesday. Officials say the next of kin notification has been completed.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones affected,” said Jeremy Alldred-Hughes, fire chief and director of emergency services. “This is a very difficult loss for our community and for our responding crews.”
