Nearly $2M fraud cheque bust in Uxbridge, Ont.

A Wasaga Beach man is one of a foursome charged with cheque fraud in Uxbridge.

Three men and a woman are facing multiple charges after a $1.9 million cheque fraud investigation last spring.

On March 16, a woman entered a bank in Uxbridge and cashed a fraudulent cheque valued at over $1.9 million.

Between the Monday and Friday, March 20, the woman and three men conducted bank transfers, withdrawals, e-transfers, wire payments, and bank drafts, to launder and take possession of these funds.

The suspects were able to fraudulently obtain more than $890,000 before all funds were frozen.

Following an investigation by Durham Regional Police’s Financial Crimes Unit, all four were located and taken into custody.

Charges include:

• A 50-year-old woman from Richmond Hill is charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering forged document, laundering proceeds of Canadian crime, possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.
• A 28-year-old from Wasaga Beach is charged with laundering the proceeds of Canadian crime, and possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.
• A 45-year-old North York man is charged with laundering the proceeds of Canadian crime, and possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.
• A 30-year-old Toronto man is charged with possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.

All were released on an undertaking.
