Driver tells cops he consumed “a lot” of alcohol

Barrie police say the driving of one man was so erratic it led to several 911 calls from concerned residents.

According to police, witnesses called shortly after midnight on Friday and reported seeing a vehicle travelling at various speeds, nearly hitting guardrails and almost side-swiping another vehicle.

After a number of calls, police say they witnessed the vehicle in the area of Mapleview Drive East near Highway 400, moving at a high rate of speed.

Police then conducted a traffic stop and according to officers, the man had bloodshot eyes and slow movements.

Police say the driver told officers he had consumed “a lot” of alcohol but then corrected himself to say “a little bit.”

The man was then taken into custody, where he did a breath test.

According to police, the man’s breath test showed his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to be 168 milligrams (mg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of blood.

For fully licensed drivers, the federal criminal BAC threshold is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

However, in Ontario, 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml is enough to get your licence suspended, among a series of other penalties.

A 33-year-old Vaughn man now faces charges of impaired operation (80 plus). His licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
