Minet’s Point residents urged to use self-serve sandbags as flooding reported

Residents in Barrie’s Minet’s Point now have access to self-serve sandbags as the city responds to reports of flooding in the area.

Starting Friday, sand and sandbags will be available at the Minet’s Point parking lot, located at 10 Lismer Boulevard.

The city says it is encouraging residents experiencing property flooding to bring their own shovels and fill bags as needed. Delivery will not be provided.

These temporary measure comes as rising water levels and saturated ground conditions have led to flooding concerns in parts of the Minet’s Point neighbourhood.

After several days of continuous rain, flooding has become a larger concern in various areas of Central Ontario, including Orillia, Minden Hills and Muskoka.

City officials say the supplies will remain available as long as needed, or until lake levels return to normal.

“Filled sandbags can be placed around lower‑level doors and windows to help prevent water from entering a home," sates the City of Barrie in a release.

With continued rainfall forecasted by Environment Canada, residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect their homes and review provincial flood emergency safety tips.
