Heatwave continues into Canada Day, up to 37 degree highs expected for Simcoe County

The intense multi-day heat event has continued into Canada Day, as humidex values are expected to reach the 40’s across Simcoe County and Muskoka.

Orange Warnings

Environment Canada’s orange heat warning remains in effect for much of west, central and south Simcoe County, including Barrie, Innisfil, New Tecumseth, Collingwood, and Wasaga Beach.

The weather agency says highs in Barrie could reach up to 37 degrees, and lows could remain above 25 degrees.

“The hottest days are expected to be (Wednesday) and Thursday,” said Environment Canada in its advisory. “Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category.”

York Region, Orangeville and Caledon are also under the orange heat warning.

Yellow Warnings

Northern parts of Simcoe County and Muskoka remain under yellow warnings, with Environment Canada calling for highs of up to 33 degrees, lows above 20 degrees and humidex values reaching 42.

Areas under yellow warnings include Orillia, Midland, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville, as well as a pocket of Dufferin County and Wellington County.

Beyond the region

Simcoe Muskoka is just a small part of the massive heat dome that encompasses almost the entire central and eastern areas of the country.

The orange warnings extend as far southwest as Windsor and as far northeast as the Ontario-Quebec border along the Ottawa river. It includes the Greater Toronto Area, Niagara Region, and the shores of Lake Huron and Southern Georgian Bay.

The yellow warnings encompass almost the entire provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick.

Taking action

Environment Canada continues to urge protective action against the heat, especially for vulnerable populations such as seniors and children.

“Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue,” said the weather agency. “Call 911 or your emergency health provider if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke which can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness.”

Other actions include staying hydrated before feeling thirsty, remaining in air-conditioned environments, and planning outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.

“Limit direct exposure to the sun and heat. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat,” continued the weather agency. “Never leave people, especially children, or pets inside a parked vehicle.”

Looking ahead

The heat event is expected to continue in Simcoe Muskoka and much of southern Ontario through Friday, and possibly into the weekend.
