Performers prepare to bring ‘Come From Away’ to life on Halifax stage

Come From Away is hitting the stage at Neptune Theatre in Halifax.

A global hit with Atlantic Canadian roots is taking centre stage in Halifax this spring.

Rehearsals for “Come From Away” at Neptune Theatre are in full swing. The award-winning musical tells the true story of 7,000 stranded passengers who were taken in by the town of Gander, N.L., during the aftermath of 9/11.

“Not only the people of Gander, but all across Newfoundland welcomed the travellers into their homes, into their communities. Also, it happened here in Halifax too, but this is focused mainly on Gander and the surrounding area,” said Jeremy Webb, Neptune Theatre artistic director.

The Neptune cast features Atlantic Canadian performers, plus a few “come from aways.”

“They’re an amazing group. We have 15 performers and we have an amazing band in the pit, live music,” said Webb.

“It’s a 90-minute show that will just fill your heart.”

Performer Becca Guilderson says rehearsals have been a lot of fun.

“The music is beautiful and stunning, and I’m just excited to have the ability to share all of those emotions and that story with people,” she said.

Guilderson adds the story behind the show reflects what it means to be human and how that humanity can be used to help the people around us.

“You don’t need to necessarily make a big impact, but every small thing does matter,” she said.

Webb believes the musical highlights what it means to be Canadian.

“And what it means to welcome the world when things get tough. Something I think we all need a little of right now,” said Webb.

“Come From Away” runs from March 31 to June 21 at Neptune Theatre.
