The annual Black Lives Matter Emancipation Day Timed Run/Walk returned to Cherry Brook, N.S. for its sixth year. More than 200 people participated in Saturday’s race at the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia. “The vibes are great. They started off with stretching and music, it was just great,” says participant Tonya Chisholm. Mekisha Johnston, founder of BLM In This Together, says the race was created to promote physical and racial wellness. “I found that it was really important for BLM In This Together to have the run focus within this community, to kind of bring it back alive if you will,” says Johnston. “Everybody is showing up at this race and ensuring that they’re fighting for anti-black racism.” Over the years the event has expanded to include a vendor’s market, wellness activities and more, but many say the race is what they look forward to the most. “It’s absolutely beautiful. I’m from Guysborough which is three hours away from here. Love the Black Cultural Centre, love the people, love Cherry Brook, its great to be here for today,” says Chisholm.
