A new documentary that explores the origins of Canada’s first professional women’s soccer team screened in Halifax on Wednesday. “The Pitch,” directed by Michèle Hozer, follows Olympic medalist Diana Matheson’s efforts to get the Northern Super League for women’s soccer off the ground. The league, which is comprised of six teams from across Canada, launched its inaugural season last April. “(The film is) really about the history of these women players who’ve brought so much to Canada,” Hozer told CTV News Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “It’s a real form of justice for these women who’ve wanted a league for so many years.” Syd Kennedy, who plays for the Halifax Tides, attended the screening of the film at Pier 21 on Wednesday. “It’s amazing to be a part of,” Kennedy said. “We feel that responsibility.” “The Pitch,” which is on a national screening tour, will have its final showing in Toronto on Nov. 12.
