Christmas Eve looked a little different at the Memramcook rink this year, as local firefighters traded their gear for skates to bring the community together. Firefighters say the goal is give families something fun to do on Christmas Eve morning while strengthening ties with the community. “Christmas Eve is something that’s special,” said Kevin Shea with the Memramcook Fire Department. “A lot of people aren’t working, and it gives families something to do with the kids in the morning before the day really gets going.” Parents say the event helps break up what can be a long day at home for young children. “It gave us something fun to do,” said one parent. “Christmas Eve can be a long day with a kid at home.” Kids skating at the rink said they enjoyed seeing friends, neighbours, and wishing people a Merry Christmas, especially while sharing the ice with firefighters and Santa. While the event is lighthearted, firefighters say it’s also an opportunity to remind families about fire safety during the holidays. Shea says Christmas decorations, candles, and cooking all increase the risk of fires this time of year. “If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure it’s well watered,” he said. “If you’re using real candles, make sure they’re put out before going to bed, and always be careful when cooking, especially with big meals like turkey.” The department says the Christmas Eve skate has become a tradition in Memramcook, marking its 10th year. Firefighters say it’s one of their favourite ways to give back. From free skates to simple safety reminders, organizers say the event shows how small traditions can bring people together — especially during the holidays.
