Icy weather extends into Wednesday evening as freezing rain warnings continue

CTV meteorologist Kalin Mitchell goes through what parts of the Maritimes will continue to be impacted by snow and freezing rain moving into Thursday.

As a low-pressure system slowly passes along the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia a mix of snowy and icy weather will continue for parts of the region into Wednesday evening and night. Here is what to watch for in each of the Maritime provinces.

New Brunswick snow and freezing rain

Freezing rain warnings continue in New Brunswick from inland Charlotte County, through the Kennebecasis Valley, and into Moncton and the southeast. The warnings call for localized ice accretion of 2 to 5 mm. That would certainly create slick surfaces. As temperatures drop through Wednesday evening remaining freezing rain is expected to turn back to snow.

Special Weather Statements continue across the southern half of New Brunswick. Along with the freezing rain the snow may accumulate into a range of five-to-15 cm. The greatest chance of snow amounts of 10-to-15 cm is for Moncton and the southeastern corner of the province.

Nova Scotia freezing rain and high wind

A Special Weather Statement extends from Cumberland County across Colchester North and Cobequid Bay into Pictou County. The statement cautions the potential of two to five hours of freezing rain before a turn to snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning. That additional period of snow could be as much as five-to-15 cm. Similar conditions can be expected at the highest elevations of the Cape Breton Highlands.

A wind warning has been issued for Northern Inverness County, Cape Breton. Due to the topography of the Highlands, southeasterly winds could peak near 90 km/h Wednesday afternoon and night.

Much of the remainder of Nova Scotia will mostly experience periods of rain, drizzle, and fog. As the rain ends overnight temperatures may fall to or below freezing. Be cautious of wet surfaces turning icy by Thursday morning.

Prince Edward Island snow and freezing rain

Prince Edward Island can expect snow to turn into a mix of freezing rain and rain Wednesday afternoon. After that the freezing rain and rain is expected to turn back to accumulating snow late Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

A Special Weather Statement is in effect for the province. The statement calls for a risk of one to two hours of freezing rain over eastern sections of the province. During the period snow Wednesday night into Thursday parts of the province could pick up 10 to 15 cm.

Commuters on Prince Edward Island should expect to encounter slippery, snow-covered roads Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
