The British woman who was trying to become the oldest person to ever sail around the world solo is returning to port in Victoria after barely a week at sea.

Seventy-four-year-old Jeanne Socrates is expected to sail back into port this weekend or early next week after her boat was seriously damaged by a storm.

She set out last Wednesday on what was to be a non-stop, eight-month trip around the globe but ran into bad weather almost immediately.

Socrates already holds the title of oldest woman to sail solo around the world, and it's not known if she will make another attempt at the title of oldest person, once her 11-metre boat is repaired.
