A wind warning has been issued for east and west Vancouver Island with gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour expected overnight.

A low off the Oregon coast will move over the west side of the island Monday night, which could cause tree branches to snap or toss loose objects around, according to Environment Canada.

The winds will move to the eastern part of the island, with winds expected to be strongest north of Qualicum Beach and north of Saltery Bay on the Sunshine Coast.

Environment Canada is recommending people avoid wooded areas to prevent injury from falling trees or branches.

The winds are expected to ease off by Tuesday morning.

Environment Canada has also issued wind warnings for Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast.

The agency is asking any reports of severe weather to be sent to pacificstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweeted with the hashtag #BCStorm.
