A Vancouver Island mayor is trying to reel in the biggest fish in the tech industry by pitching his city as a possible host for Amazon's new headquarters.

Langford Mayor Stew Young says he's throwing his hat in the ring, joining other cities from Washington, DC to Winnipeg in trying to woo the online retail giant.

Amazon announced earlier this month that it wanted to set up a second office in North America.

The company said it would spend more than $5-billion USD to build the headquarters and it would create as many as 50,000 jobs over the next 15 years, all paying more than $100,000 salaries.

Young said there's no shortage of competition from other cities, but he believes Langford has a unique edge.

"All these other cities are going to be applying for it but maybe because we're affordable, because we have recreation, because the lifestyle is good and the weather is great," he said. "I mean, we can tick a lot of boxes off that other cities cannot do."

Business experts call it a major longshot given that major metropolitan cities like Toronto and New York City are also vying for the headquarters, but call Young's pitch a great PR move.

"I think it's a really bold move," said Dr. Mark Colgate of UVic's Gustavson School of Business. "Basically Langford is saying 'We are open for business. We are available for large companies, we have the space, we have the motivation.'"

One Victoria tech company owner thinks it's unlikely Amazon will set up shop in Greater Victoria.

"Our region hires 20,000 people. To add another 50,000 highly skilled workers, I think it would be a daunting task," said Tim Teh, co-founder and CEO of Kano/Apps.

While some may call it a pipe dream, Young says it's all in the details – and he's even willing to rename a portion of Leigh Road to "Amazon Way."

"What you see here is exactly what Amazon wants. They needed about 100 acres, we have about 125 acres," he said.

The company will be making what it wants known soon. All bids on the headquarters are due by Oct. 19.

It's current campus in Seattle hires more than 40,000 employees and consists of 33 buildings, taking up 8.1-million square feet in total.
