Rallies were scheduled in cities across Canada on Saturday, including on Vancouver Island, in support of the Women’s March on Washington.

The marches were held in solidarity with a massive rally in Washington, D.C., the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as the nation's 45th president.

A large crowd joined the global movement at Victoria's Centennial Square.

Politicians spoke at the event, including Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May.

"I haven't seen this many people gathered in the square for a long time, it's packed," Helps said.

Passionate protesters carried their message through a march downtown chanting "we all fight back."

Rallies were also held in Nanaimo and Courtenay.

The aim of the Women's March was to support women's rights, in response to what is described on an event page as "the hate-inciting, divisive, discriminatory attitudes, messages and actions that have emerged from the Trump campaign and have continued to be perpetuated by his supporters post-election, in his name."
