A family-owned restaurant in Victoria has closed its doors after more than half a century in business.

The Rathskeller Schnitzel Haus, the city’s only German restaurant, served its final schnitzels and steins Sunday night.

It moved to its current location on Quadra at View streets in the early 80s and besides some minor changes, the menu and overall concept of the restaurant have remained the same for decades, according to owner Andrea Sims.

“Well we’re all sad. We’re looking forward to a big party for us,” she said. “We’re all patting each other on the back and tearing up and staff, who have worked for us for 53 years, we’ve had a lot of staff who have been contacting us from all over.”

People who ate their final meals there Sunday said the closure of such a long-standing institution is a loss for the city.

“It is sad when you see something that’s been around as long as the Rathskeller has. In a way it has become part of Victoria,” said one diner.

The owner confirmed the building has been sold, and said she’s looking forward to some time off.
