Five rental units in Victoria will be barged to Port Townsend, Wash. next week where they will become affordable housing.

The five-plex currently stands on the lot on Oliphant Avenue. Urban Core Ventures says it’s donated the structure, rather than demolishing it

“We’ve donated it recently to a non-profit out of Port Townsend…they provide low income families with housing,” said Lindsay Shojania.

The complex was built in 1949 and features a basement suite, two units on the main level and two on the top floor, according to Shojania.

The company says the building was inspected and is in “excellent shape.”

The five-plex will begin its move on Tuesday and will get to its new home by mid-May.

Shojania says the company initially tried to keep the property in Victoria.

“There wasn’t quite the right piece of property that would be suited to it, but we made effort for the last few years to do this,” she said.

On Monday, the Port of Townsend City Council voted unanimously to loan as much as $250,000 to the Olympic Housing Trust in order to make the project possible.

The Victoria real estate developer is building 53 residential units with commercial potential in its place.

Construction on the new project broke ground earlier this week and it’s scheduled to be completed in about 18 months.
