The police team that handles Greater Victoria’s most dangerous situations was called to a home in Fairfield in what became an hours-long standoff with the man inside.

Officers were called to the 1400-block of Brooke Street to check on the welfare of a man just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.

They unsuccessfully tried to start a conversation with the man, but called in the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team after learning the man had a weapon that could potentially cause harm to responding officers, according to police.

After what police called a “lengthy standoff” with the man, he was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act just before 3:30 a.m.

Police said they were initially called to the home after somebody reported they were concerned about the man's welfare.
