Police say they’ve arrested a prolific offender following a string of nine break-and-enters in a Saanich neighbourhood.

It happened on Aug. 18 at a local pawn shop.

Police had identified the 33-year-old Saanich man as a person of interest in the thefts and watched him pawn stolen jewelry, then arrested him when he left.

The stolen jewelry was later returned to its rightful owners.

Police obtained a warrant to search a home in the 4300-block of West Saanich Road, and say they found evidence from other break and enters which all took place in the area north of Vanalman Road.

Police say the thief was able to gain access to the homes through either insecure second-floor windows or forced entry.

They’re urging homeowners to properly secure their homes even in hot summer months.

The suspect, who is known to police, remains in custody and faces two counts of break and enter and one count of possession of property obtained by crime.

He’ll make a court appearance Wednesday and could face further charges.
