Some school districts closed, buses ran at limited service and flights were grounded Friday morning as Vancouver Island woke up to a fresh helping of snow.

Environment Canada had issued a snowfall warning, saying up to 20 centimetres could fall in the region, but only five centimetres of snow were recorded at the Victoria International Airport, while the Malahat received 10 centimetres.

West Shore RCMP reported a single-vehicle crash on the Malahat near Aspen Road, and in Saanich, crews responded to a rollover in the 3900-block of Blenkinsop Road around 9:30 a.m. No injuries were reported in that crash.

Snowfall was relatively minor on the South Island where the Sooke, Saanich and the Greater Victoria school districts remained open.

SD61, the Greater Victoria School district, said bus service would be cancelled for the day despite schools staying open.

But several schools up-island closed due to treacherous road conditions.

All schools closed in the Comox Valley School District, the Cowichan Valley School District and in Port Renfrew.

Sal Spring Island and all Gulf Island schools also closed.

Schools in Nanaimo and Qualicum remained open and buses were running, but officials said there may be delays due to road conditions.

Harbour Air said it was cancelling all of its flights due to the conditions, leaving some travellers with limited options for getting on or off the island.

Helijet said it was operating on a weather hold indefinitely.

Some flights were cancelled or delayed at Victoria International Airport.

All BC Ferries sailings appeared to be operating on schedule.

BC Transit said due to road conditions in Victoria, buses were unable to keep to posted schedules and many routes were cancelled or modified.

A complete list of the affected routes can be found on BC Transit's Facebook page.

Cities up and down Vancouver Island are reminding residents and storefronts to keep their sidewalks shoveled to comply with local bylaws.

Anyone who doesn’t shovel snow could be slapped with fines of up to $125 per day.
