A skateboarder was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after he was struck by a car in Saanich Thursday night.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. on the McKenzie Avenue on ramp to the Pat Bay Highway.

Police said a vehicle was turning right onto the on ramp when it struck the skateboarder, who was in a crosswalk.

“The vehicle was travelling onto the onramp when a skateboarder skated in front of the vehicle and collided with the vehicle,” said Sgt. Alan Gurzinski.

Paramedics rushed the skateboarder, a man in his 20s, to hospital with serious head injuries.

The area was closed for several hours while crash analysts carried out their investigation.

Police used the incident as a reminder to everyone to wear easily visible clothing when out at night.

“The one important thing we want to message out here is pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders: please, please be seen. Make sure you get eye contact with the drivers, and make sure they stop before you enter an intersection,” Gurzinski said. “Wear not just bright clothing, but reflective clothing. Bright clothing does not show up at night.”
