A hunt for loose chickens outside of Nanaimo continued on Friday, two days after they were discovered crossing a logging road.

A woman who is searching for the birds said they were abandoned, without food or water.

“Not very cool at all actually, they’re an animal like any other animal. You don’t just ditch a dog on the side of the road. You don’t ditch chickens either,” Hailey Ashbaugh said.

A local 4X4 club ‘Sticks N’ Stones,’ which frequents the area to clean-up piles of garbage, stumbled upon the chicks.

“We’re out doing garbage clean-ups and now chicken rescues,” the club’s Victoria Lundquist told CTV News. “We just want to help out with the community too.”

The club fears if the chickens aren’t rescued, they could become prey.

“I imagine there’s got to be cougars, bears. There’s all sorts of dangers out here,” Lundquist added.

Five of the animals were captured on Wednesday and one was found on Thursday.

“We’re going to build them a coop and get them healthy and make them happy,” Lundquist said.

The team was out again on Friday looking for more chickens. They told CTV News that they're not giving up until they find them all.

“Hopefully we’re going to find the rest of them. There’s anywhere between 10 and 18 of them apparently,” Ashbaugh noted.
