Vancouver Island RCMP are conducting an investigation after officers seized a ‘significant’ amount of fentanyl near Nanaimo earlier this month.

It happened close to Cassidy Airport around 5 p.m. on Oct. 10.

According to police, a vehicle was travelling southbound on the Island Highway when Mounties pulled it over.

A Vancouver Island man was arrested and officers found cash and one kilogram of fentanyl in the vehicle.

It’s one of the largest seizures for the RCMP in B.C. over the past few years, the Island District says.

“Our investigation is continuing to look for all those connected and responsible in the alleged trafficking of a harmful illicit substance in addition to determining the ultimate destination for the drug,” Cpl. Tammy Douglas said.

The man arrested has been released and charges are pending.

The Federal Serious and Organized Crime Group on Vancouver Island is handling the investigation.

The seizure comes as the BC Coroners Service announced the number of illicit drug-related deaths in the province this year has already exceeded the total for 2015.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
