Police were called to the tarmac of Victoria International Airport after a man caused a minor disturbance on an Air Canada plane Thursday morning.

Sidney-North Saanich RCMP got a call about the disturbance on an Air Canada Jazz flight from Vancouver to Victoria around 11:30 a.m.

When police showed up on scene the passenger had already been removed from the plane by airport personnel, according to RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Manseau.

Investigators spoke with airport staff and the man, who was released, Manseau said.

“The matter was quickly resolved without incident,” he said. “The passenger was removed prior to our attendance and he went off on his way.”

He said disturbances on airplanes don’t happen often, but police aren’t willing to leave anything to chance.

“Obviously with airline travel being a high priority, any incidences that get reported to police we treat very seriously,” he said. “The person was very apologetic for their behaviour and hopefully they’ve learned their lesson.”

An Air Canada spokeswoman confirmed that the company requested authorities respond to the airport, but did not provide specifics about the type of disturbance caused.

"I can say that our crew members are professionals who are well-trained to handle challenging situations," said Debra Williams. "We always strive to provide a safe and comfortable flight for our passengers and a safe working environment for our employees as safety is our top priority."

Police said there will be no charges in the incident.
