Firefighters say quick-thinking staff at a Comox pub prevented a kitchen fire from being much worse.

Employees at the Griffin Pub were preparing for the lunch crowd on Sunday when the deep fryers caught fire.

“If they hadn’t been there and it had caught fire then it would’ve been more serious, but it was their quick action and calling it in that kept it just to the kitchen,” Comox Fire Asst. Chief Jim Lariviere said.

Fire crews say the liquid from the fryers, which is flammable, caused complications while they were extinguishing the blaze.

“We actually used the wet chemical extinguishers […] we didn’t want to use water to spread it,” Lariviere said. “We shut the gas off and it went out.”

The extent of the damage is unclear at this time.
