The lights are back on for thousands of BC Hydro customers in Victoria and Saanich who lost power overnight due to faulty equipment at the Esquimalt substation.

Power was knocked out to more than 2,500 customers just after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday night, and 3,200 more customers lost power around 10:45 p.m.

All of the more than 5,700 outages were restored by 5 a.m. Thursday morning.

At its peak, the outage stretched as far north as Tillicum Mall and as far south as Jutland Road, and include some businesses along Douglas Street.

Traffic lights were also knocked out at several intersections.

BC Hydro confirmed the outage had been traced back to faulty equipment at the Esquimalt substation.

It’s the same substation firefighters were called to on Tuesday, but it’s unclear whether the incidents are related.
