A 30-year-old Sooke man is facing several charges following a four hour standoff with police on Monday.

Mounties were called around 10:15 p.m. to a property in the 2100-block of Church Road.

Officials say a man with a sawed-off shotgun had threatened to kill another man and said that he would burn the house down.

Officers heard what sounded like a shotgun racking and determined the man was inside an outbuilding on the property, which is a small farm.

Police say the man, who is well-known to them, was uncooperative.

"The suspect responded to numerous requests for him to surrender by emphasizing his lack of affection for the police with coarse language" said S/Sgt. Jeff McArthur.

The Emergency Response Team was called in and tear gas was used inside the building.

After four hours the 30-year-old surrendered and was arrested. He was uninjured in the incident.

The Sooke man has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, uttering threats and failing to comply with a probation order.

He is scheduled to appear in a Colwood court Wednesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing.
