Victoria police were called to the Mayfair Shopping Centre Monday night after a man allegedly threatened a security guard with a hatchet.

It’s believed the security guard approached a suspected shoplifter at Hudson’s Bay around 6:25 p.m.

The security guard said that’s when the man threatened him with a hatchet before taking off.

Officers set up a staging area on the roof of the mall as well as in a nearby parking lot.

The 31-year-old was eventually arrested on Rutledge Street.

The canine unit reportedly located two hatchets.

No one was injured in the incident.

The man is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on charges of assault with a weapon, armed robbery and resisting arrest.
