A Langford supermarket is uncorking a first for Greater Victoria.
On Friday, a Real Canadian Superstore in the West Shore community became the first grocery retailer to sell wine in the region.
The B.C. government modernized liquor laws for grocery stores to be able to sell wine nearly two years ago, but the program has been slow to roll out across the province.
Loblaw’s, the parent company of Real Canadian Superstore, says the Langford location is the fifth of its stores to obtain the new licence and stock more than 400 varieties of wine.
It will also offer a wine expert on staff during peak business hours to help customers looking for recommendations and food pairings.
Earlier this year, B.C. relaxed liquor laws even more, allowing any business that doesn’t serve children to apply for a licence, such as barbers, bookstores and art galleries.
The changes stem from B.C.’s 2013 Liquor Policy Review which consulted the public, law enforcement, health officials and business communities across the province.
