Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge will be closed to all traffic, cyclists and pedestrians overnight Wednesday as construction on the replacement bridge ramps up.

The bridge and the marine channel underneath it will shut down at 9 p.m. Wednesday night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

Crews will removing old wooden piles to clear room for a crane barge that will be used during the installation of the new bridge.

The bridge will be in its full open position while the work is underway.

The city says a detour from downtown to Vic West and Esquimalt will be available via the Bay Street Bridge.

The new bridge, which is nearly three years behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget, is slated to open next spring.
