People on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands are being urged to reduce their water consumption.

The province says most streams and rivers on the islands are experiencing "very low flows" similar to this time last year.

It says southern Vancouver Island south of Tofino, Campbell River and the Gulf Islands are experiencing Level 3 drought conditions that call for voluntary water use reductions of 30 per cent by municipal, agricultural and industrial users.

It says the region will likely experience significant water supply shortages this year unless there is substantial rain between now and the end of June.
