Island Health says it has extra measures in place on the heels of a historic cyberattack that hit computers around the world, including in Canada.

A spokesperson tells CTV News the health authority’s systems are unaffected in the global ransomware attack that’s believed to be the largest online extortion attempt ever recorded.

“We informed all staff on Friday about the cyberattack,” said Meribeth Burton. “We advised everyone to take extra precautions and send all suspicious emails to our IT dept.”

A hospital in southern Ontario confirmed it experienced computer problems on Friday that were linked to the attack.

Security experts are warning of more possible disruptions on Monday when workers turn on their computers.

On Friday, the attack hit victims in 150 countries, paralyzing computers that run hospitals, banks and government agencies.

The attack held users hostage by freezing their computers, encrypting their data and demanding money.
