A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital Saturday after he fell and injured his leg while hiking near Comox Lake.

More than a dozen search and rescue members spent several hours looking for the hiker and transporting him to an ambulance.

Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue says three hikers ran into trouble around 4 p.m.

“They had travelled quite a significant distance and they were off trail at the time when he went into a pile of debris and down through a hole and dislocated his knee,” search manager Paul Berry said.

Berry added that it took a while to get to the injured man due to difficult terrain and the fact that it was snowing heavily at the time.

The crew says the hikers weren’t prepared for the conditions and to deal with a medical emergency.

“He was quite hypothermic when the team arrived,” Berry said. “They had not moved him from the location so he was down in the snow wearing just a sweatshirt.”

The SAR team is reminding hikers to pack proper essentials like food, water, a flashlight and warm clothing.
