A former conservation officer who made international headlines after he was suspended for refusing to destroy two bear cubs has announced political ambitions.

Bryce Casavant said he’s running as an NDP candidate in the new Vancouver Island riding of Comox/Courtenay in the 2017 provincial election.

"I have spent my life trying to do the right thing, and now I want to do the right thing for the people of British Columbia," Casavant said.

Casavant was suspended after he defied orders from the province to kill two bear cubs in 2015.

The former conservation officer tranquilized the cubs and transferred them to the wildfire centre.

Following the suspension he accepted a transfer to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

He is currently a natural resource officer and a doctoral candidate at Royal Roads University.

Casavant said he’s looking forward to spending the coming months listening to people’s concerns in the community.

His top priorities include senior’s care, sustainable employment and clean water.
