Crews in Cumberland battled a blaze Thursday night at the childhood home of a son and father who are volunteer firefighters themselves.

Flames broke out at the residence on Minto Road, in between the towns of Royston and Cumberland, on Thursday night.

The fire was sparked on the back porch and quickly spread to the roof, according to officials.

“The roof was fully involved. It’s a tin roof and it was like 380 degrees, smoke coming out of every corner, out of every eave, every gable end,” said Cumberland Fire Chief Mike Williamson.

The father and son who lived in the home are now volunteers with the Comox and Courtenay Fire departments.

Williamson said the pair, who arrived on scene during the battle, had a tough time watching their childhood house go up in flames.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the homeowners recover some of their costs.

"My dad lost his house yesterday to fire! He is insured but there are always unforseen expenses. This coming 1 month before his 70th birthday," the page reads.

No one was inside the home when the fire broke out. A cause has not been determined.
