The cause of a fire that broke out at a heritage home in Fernwood Wednesday morning is under investigation, but crews were able to stop it from spreading.

Crews including three fire engines, one rescue vehicle and one ladder truck were called to the home on Fernwood at Balmoral roads at 9:17 a.m.

Smoke was seen pouring from eaves under the roof and at one point, flames were spotted shooting out of the steeple of the home.

Crews had to access the roof and attic areas to isolate and contain the flames, and fire damage was limited to those areas.

The main and upper floors of the home, however, suffered significant water damage, according to investigators.

Emergency Social Services was dispatches to the scene to assist displaced tenants and were told all tenants were covered by insurance.

It’s unclear when they’ll be allowed back in to the building.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
